Hi friends! We are enjoying our last few weeks of summer together as a family before everyone heads back to school. At the beginning of summer, I had a few things on my summer “home to-do” list:
-
Meal planning/Recipe Organizing-failed to complete that this summer, hopefully this fall?!?!
-
Making Updates to my boys’ room-got some of that accomplished, which I will share soon.
-
Transitioning my baby girl to a big girl bed-Decided to put that one off a bit longer.
-
And last but not least…FINALLY finishing our powder bath!
I am happy to say that I was able to finish all the big projects in this bathroom this summer. Pretty much the only “to-do” I was able to get checked off!
So this seriously has been the longest project to complete and it’s such a small space in our house. The size of the space didn’t seem to warrant the length of time, but that’s usually how it goes, right? While I’m in the middle of a lingering project, I always think “This is taking such a ridiculously long time to finish and I just want it to be over!” And then when it’s finally completed I think, “Well, that wasn’t so bad or so long…I need to remember that next time I’m in the middle of a long project and I’m over it.” But I don’t seem to ever remember that.
Our powder room is the bathroom we use most during the day. My kids are in and out of there all day long and it was the last of the spaces downstairs that still had wallpaper. And I mean wallpaper. Everywhere. Like Waverly threw up all over our bathroom….walls, coordinating pattern on the ceiling, matching border, and a matching valance to complete the look. I love wallpaper, although I don’t have any new paper in our house just because my kiddos are too hard on our house, but berries in various shapes and sizes all over a small room was just too much for me.
This is the powder room on inspection day before we bought our house.
There’s that ceiling. And border. And matching valance.
A couple of summers ago, we had all the trim and the door and the vanity cabinet painted our white trim color {Dunn Edwards White. I add some extra whiteness that my painter suggested for better coverage. If you are interested in the extra formula, email me.} Then I started scraping wallpaper on Dec. 18th last year. I had about a million other things I should have been doing instead of stripping wallpaper, but it was bugging me so I just started.
It took me about 6 months to get it all down!!! UGH! We had a new shutter put in and new moulding put up. I went with Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter {in Dunn Edwards paint} on the walls. Throughout our house, I use Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White {also in Dunn Edwards paint} on the ceilings in every room. I used eggshell finish in this bathroom on both the walls and the ceiling. It doesn’t have much sheen and this room gets a beating, so I wanted it to clean easily. I personally never use flat paint except on a ceiling that is not a bathroom or the kitchen. Flat paint makes me feel like I can’t breathe in a room. Weird I know, but it’s just too “chalky” feeling and kinda gives me the heeby geebies!!! I also wipe down my walls a lot and if you have flat paint, it will burnish it {leave a little shiny spot} where it’s rubbed, so I stick with velvet or eggshell.
This is what it looks like today. When the cabinet was painted, we changed out the hardware. I got the mirror a couple years ago at Homegoods and I love it, but I may paint it a little different color at some point.
I love Instagram! I found this great feed, @fortheloveshop and she makes beautiful signs. I saw one photo that was showcasing her signs in a shop and I contacted her and I was able to order this adorable sign. I LOVE it! It’s my personal motto. I didn’t know it was until I saw this saying a few years ago, but then I knew it was my motto :) It pretty much says it all!
