Being half way through November I figured now would be a good time to start thinking about setting New Year’s Design Resolutions. Starting (and completing) home projects usually takes some preparation, so I thought some tips on setting achievable goals might be helpful.
- Focus on what you’re going to do, not what you haven’t done
Release yourself from guilt. Concentrate on the present and your goals. Don’t punish yourself for what isn’t done, celebrate what you’ve accomplished. These positive thoughts will drive you to do more.
- Size up your resolutions
Of course you can dream about the big picture, but to make it more obtainable break it down into smaller bites. (this is especially true when it comes to larger projects) Purchase the items that are a necessity for the room to function. Then finish the space with the decorative accents. Finish one room completely then move on to the next. This way you will have place to relax and get away from your “design to do list”.
- Divide up your goals into 3-month segments
Make a list of the things you want to get done around your home. Stick these in a 3-month planner or write on a wall calendar. You’ll be surprised at how this will help you achieve twice as much in half the time.
- ’tis the Season
Work on interior decorating projects during the cold months. In the spring, switch to exterior projects for a change of pace, then in the hot months move back inside.
- Align yourself with a mentor/supporter
We all need affirmation, especially if we are being creative. Be sure you have someone around you at all times who genuinely appreciates you and your creativity. Get feedback from those kinds of people. It will nourish and sustain you.
- Reward yourself
Take time to unwind and relieve any pressures building up. Go buy that new chair or work of art or fine accessory you saw recently. Treat yourself. You’re worth it.
Don’t worry if you don’t get your resolution done before the turn of the new year. I’m sure we’ll be re-addressing this topic before 2012. I never get my goals down on paper the first time I think about it, usually takes a few sittings. So, don’t worry…we’re in this together and we’ll get it done.
