Ideas & Inspiration

Easy, Inexpensive Art

October 19, 2012 By Living Solutions Interior Design

  It takes me so long to complete projects around my home!!! I wrote about this calendar back here.  A month ago. I wrote how to “check back next week and see the project I tackled.” In my defense, I started working on this project about a month ago and then finally hung the pictures earlier this week!

As many of us know, furnishing and accessorizing our homes can add up quickly. I needed some additional art for our living room that wasn’t crazy expensive, but I also wanted it a bit unique. As I wrote a month ago, I had a calendar that I had picked up years ago and was going to use as inexpensive art in our home.  I loved the images and thought it would blend nicely with the colors I loved to use for our home.

I purchased the RIBBA frames from Ikea-they’ve become a favorite of mine. They are simple, modern, and come in a few different finishes and lots of sizes that can be worked into a gallery wall or on it’s own. {I usually get the white finish.}

Since the sizes of the calendar prints were not a standard size, I needed some custom mats. I took the calendar and the frame to Michael’s {my favorite framing store just because they do a good job and if you are patient, they often have at least a 40% off framing coupon to use} to get fitted for a custom mat for the somewhat odd size of the print. I chose just a plain white mat and they ended up costing me about $20 a piece. The calendar was purchased for about $10 at a local stationary store about 6 years ago because it was already February or March of the year of the calendar. Not bad for 12 prints.
Because they were going on an off white wall, I needed a different finish for the frame other than white. I wanted to bring in some more metal finishes into the room and so I decided to use a can of Rust-oleum antique bronze finish that I already had on hand.

I had to do some touch up once they were all painted. They’re not perfect, but the bronze finish adds the needed metal touch to the room. The white mats also brighten up the wall a bit more.

I hung the pair of calendar prints with a print we’ve had for quite some time. The colors and style work well together.

So one little wall is now complete!
Have a good weekend :)
