Ideas & Inspiration

The Laundry Room Today

August 8, 2013 By Living Solutions Interior Design

As you can tell from my lack of writing, it’s been busy around here! Lots of projects, time enjoying summer with family and getting ready for the school year coming up! I have a kindergartner and a new preschooler this year and my husband is starting his last year of law school so life is about to get CRAZY!!! I’m actually slightly concerned about it all. They all start school the same week and then it’s go time. On top of school, soccer season is starting, swim lessons are still going, etc. Maybe I’ll share some tips on what I’m doing over here to keep it somewhat organized and moving. Maybe. As you can tell from my overabundance of writing, I’m not promising anything!

But today, I thought I’d share where our laundry room is today. It’s not completely finished, but I figure I’ll share new pictures of things I’ve added when I get around to it!

So just as a reminder of what it looked like…

And as of yesterday.

I’m planning on putting a shelf under the shorter upper cabinets on that back wall to house my iron. On the big, left wall, under the turquoise framed art, there will be a gallery wall of photos of my kids being messy. My kids are kind of notorious for being messy, and I’ve got lots of fun pictures! I finally got some more of my favorite Ikea Ribba frames yesterday, so those pictures will go up very soon.  Where the ironing board and closet door is, there was a cabinet. We took that out, enclosed some of the garage to make a closet and added a built in ironing board.

I had our contractor build a hamper cabinet {missing one of the hampers…it was upstairs at the time!} to fit our hampers. I bought a few extra just in case! The idea is that I can sort laundry before hand to go into the wash and as it comes out of the dryer for each person and one for anything extra like towels. It makes laundry a bit smoother. Now we don’t have stacks of hampers and clothes all over the place all the time. But we do still occasionally have dirty clothes piles on the floor on laundry day.

I also wanted a place to hang dry clothes, as we do a lot of that. We added an extendable closet rod between the hamper cabinet and the upper cabinet for hanging.

Cleaning supplies, pet supplies and laundry supplies are kept in the corner and right cabinets and the higher cabinet is for paper towels.

We added recessed lighting and put in new floor, molding, and painted.

And my favorite…a super organized closet!
Seriously, it makes me so happy every time I open it!

I used the Elfa system again from The Container Store. The white plastic bins I’ve had for awhile. One is for clean cleaning rags and one is for dirty ones. On the upper shelf I have vacuum attachments and overflow paper towels.

And I added a clear shoe organizer over the back of the door for all our little stuff, like batteries, felt floor protectors, etc. I still have a lot to move in here, so I’ll share that when I get around to it.BLOG***Laundery Closet 1

So that’s our new laundry room! It’s so much more functional and makes the never ending chore of laundry slightly more tolerable. Slightly.

Only wish now I had a little elf to put it all away for me!
