Oh No! My Chalkboard!!!

February 3, 2013 By Living Solutions Interior Design

I wrote about our large chalkboard in our upstairs hallway awhile back. I have written fun little sayings on it since we’ve had it…holiday wishes, a welcome home note to our baby girl, a countdown to Christmas, etc.

A couple of weeks ago, after a very long day shuttling my super sick husband and three kids around San Diego to different clinics to help my hubby get better, I came home and wrote “Feel better soon, daddy” on the chalkboard with my liquid chalk markers. I hadn’t used the pen on my chalkboard yet, but I had used it on chalkboard labels and it isn’t the most permanent writing medium, so I figured it was safe. However, recently looking through different catalogs, I have noticed on chalkboards some of them have said “not compatible with liquid chalk.”

Interesting…

So as I was writing this message to my hubby, the thought crossed my mind “I hope this chalkboard is liquid chalk compatible…” and then just kept on writing. And then panicked a bit and got a towel to see if it erased. And then REALLY panicked when it didn’t smudge.
Not.one.bit.

UGH! I had totally just ruined my newish chalkboard and now I would have to paint it over with chalkboard paint. Not really excited about that. So I quickly googled “how to remove liquid chalk.” There were a few suggestions: Wet rag and Windex…each of which didn’t really work. So I kept googling and found this website: chalkinkworldstore and they had chalkboard cleaners listed.

Magic Eraser

I had some on hand and it was worth a try.
With a little elbow grease, it all came out, thank goodness!!!

I love the look of the liquid chalk, but I don’t like the fact that you can’t easily erase it. At least on my chalkboard. The Magic Eraser did make the board a bit harder to write on with regular chalk afterwards, but I’m hoping if I keep using regular chalk it’ll get back to how it was. And I am not opposed to using a chalk pen in the future, now that I know how to get it off. It has such a cleaner look than regular chalk, don’t you think?

Anyone else had a major oops and should have tested something prior to using it full force? Have you used liquid chalk and had success? Any brands of chalk pens you like or better ways to erase it?

Lesson from this little mishap:
Test on a small area prior to use!

Now off to go cheer for our favorite football team :)

Too funny seeing this post right now, because I was about to try out a liquid chalkboard pen on a new chalkboard easel I bought. As another option I read somewhere that you should dip the tip of regular chalk into water and then write on the board for a cleaner look, similar to a pen. I’m gonna try it out and see how it works. Fingers crossed. The pen is going back in the drawer for now.

I did a grey chalkboard instead of a dark black. I wrote a countdown to christmas in red and green chalk, and even with a wet rag there is green left over. Im hoping the magic eraser does the trick!! I also wrote in a liquid pen but if it stays permanently im not going to be upset because its a calendar and i want to keep it anyway.
