The last few weeks I’ve been working on taking down the wallpaper in our upstairs’ hall.
I’m so anxious to get our family photos and some other cool things up on our walls!!! Our downstairs’ hall looks just the same, so that will get tackled as soon as I finish upstairs. Right now we have a bit of a chair rail/wainscoting going on already, but without the dark blue wallpaper border, it looked a bit low and puny once the wallpaper came down.
I’d like to see something a little different than what we have in the way of wainscoting on these walls. I love the idea of detail in the hallways, and I’ve been pouring over Pinterest to find inspiration on what I’d like to do to beef up the existing wainscoting, and came across some beautiful walls!
After a bit of deliberation and a meeting with our dry wall guy, {our walls need to be primed with oil base primer and then a light new texture needs to be applied} who will also change out the moldings, we’ve decided this house is more of a “coastal” {think Nantucket or Cape Cod} kind of style house than “colonial.”
The reason for going back and forth deciding on the actual style is that this house was/is confused. There are a lot of “coastal” elements to it: A vaulted white washed wood ceiling in our master bedroom {that I promise, I’ll show pictures of one of these days}, wide white painted paneling in the living room, dining room and family room, and an exterior that is a bit more east coast coastal. However, there are also some colonial traits: A more stylized detail in the down stairs hallway, older brick walls, trimmed out beams in the living room that feel like a coiffured ceiling, and a lot of brass details.
I didn’t even really realize that we kind of needed to pick until I was working on this project!
HELLO-DUH, RIGHT?
Here I am a designer and I knew that I wanted to get our hands on most every aspect of this house and make it our own, but I hadn’t actually labeled the exact style.
I love the look of a wainscoting with beautiful details, but adding more details and trim would have been a bit more complicated than what we wanted to tackle for the halls. So, after I found this inspiration,
I knew that this house was decidedly moving towards more “coastal,” which suits us just fine: A bit more relaxed and comfortable and not to fancy and traditional, with modern touches added in and a lived in feel.
I’ve been working on that wallpaper every chance I have! I hope to get it completed in the next week so we can start working on the finishing details. I also hope to FINALLY get to Home Depot to get the materials for the board mounted valance I still need to get completed for the command center. I swear my nesting instincts are kicking in to full gear because I know in a few months it’s not going to be so easy to get these projects done! I want some of the main projects on our to-do list checked off :)
What projects are you working on lately? Any interesting stories about wallpaper?!?!
