Fall is creeping into our weather here in the Midwest. Cooler mornings and evenings are the first signal that Fall is on it’s way, and I love it!
To prep the inside of our home for Fall, I’ve taken down all our “summery” vibes. I have left it bare for a bit, with a simplified feel. I personally love for our home to reflect the seasons but I am not a huge seasonal decorator. When my kids were little and we were home a lot more, I loved having all the seasonal decorations, but as my schedule and our family has gotten busier, I don’t spend as much time adding all the seasonal touches.
Over the last few years, though, I have adopted an approach for changing up our homes for each season that works amazing…Using our 5 Senses.
Using your 5 senses is an easy, practical way to create an atmosphere of Welcome in your home.
Music
Music {and scents} are the fastest way to invoke memories, and an easy way to welcome the season into your home. It’s so nice to have some instrumental music playing in the background during homework time and pump up music to blare during after-dinner clean-up! Make up your own play-list, or fine one that feels like the season. The Cozy Autumn Instrumentals play-list on Spotify has been playing on repeat!
Scents
Candles, essential oils and diffusers, or candle melts are also a great way to set the tone in your home and trigger your mind to past seasons. I have realized just recently, I really can only handle a soy-based candle. Headaches come on strong within a few minutes of using a paraffin-based candle, so if you are experiencing ill effects from candles, try a soy based candle and see if that helps.
Food
Hearty soups breads are a staple at our house once the weather turns cooler. Think of foods that remind you of the season you’re in and mix those into your meal rotation.
Textures
A chunky blanket, velvet pillows and a cozy sweater all help usher in the current season. Add touches of different textures in your home to invite curling up.
Tidy, Clean and Organized
This isn’t a “seasonal” tip, but this time of year adds a bit more obligation and stress to your life. Stripping away the physical clutter and chaos in your home will help your mindset.
I grabbed a few other things last week to change up the seasonal vibe in my home. I try to always have hand soaps that reflect the season. I love the colors, and scents and I have found over the years it’s a strong encourager for kids to actually use the soap when I tell them to go wash their hands! I picked up a fresh set of “Fall” dishtowels to have out, and my favorite Target soy candles in Fall scents and these delicious smelling soy wax melts for our warmer.
So what team are you on? “All Out” or “Cozy Minimal”? I would love to hear!
