Last week I wrote about our the the selection of our new sectional. During that same trip, we purchased our new dining table for our “formal” dining room. Right now, we have a small rectangular table for our breakfast nook off of our kitchen and current family room that we use for everyday use as well as larger gatherings.
With the one leaf in, it seats a max of 8 people, and even then we’re pretty cozy :). We usually have Easter at our house with extended family, and we’ve hosted the last two Thanksgivings with some our immediate and extended family, and it looks like because of this news, we’ll be around this year for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, too. We both really wanted to have the space to host whatever family could join us this coming fall.
Our dining room has been empty since we moved in except for a piece I’ve had since high school when it was used as a stereo cabinet, and then as a sideboard in our most recent homes. {We will now be using it in the baby’s room…and that’s a whole other post!!!} I swore I had a picture of our dining room and I’ve looked through all my pictures twice and can’t seem to find one. I’ll have to post one later this week. This piece was on our brick wall in the dining room and when we moved it to another wall, it really opened up the space. We thought we would just need to move our chandelier over a bit and then the room would be perfect for a big, round dining table.
We both loved the idea of a round table, so I started looking for a 54″ or 60″ round that could seat a lot of people, but the largest I ended up finding was at 60″ with one 24″ leaf. At that size, we could seat a max of 8 maybe 9 people if we really squeezed in. I then set my sights on getting a custom dining table made that could seat 10 easily-that was my goal…to be able to have 10 people comfortably for a meal. When I got the quote back, I knew that was out because it was way too much money.
So we settled on the Cameron 60″ round dining table from Ethan Allen.
However, once we got to the showroom to order it, I had some reservations that we would only be able to seat 8 people and that was pretty much what we could seat at our other dining table. Jason agreed with me, so we ultimately decided on the Cameron Extension rectangular table.
We can easily seat 10 when it’s extended and possibly 12. Because of the pedestal base and the table being 42″ wide, two people can probably fit on each end if needed.
The next step was determining the finish we wanted to use.
It was either Caraway
or Mushroom with White Glaze
The Caraway finish is classic and a bit more traditional, but it is pretty much the same finish as our hardwood floor. The Mushroom with White Glaze was a bit more of risk, but definitely more of the coastal, casual look that we are trying to accomplish. So we went out on a limb and ordered the Mushroom with White Glaze.
This is what our dining room floor plan will look like with our new table:
Dining table without the leaf in-this has different pieces in the plan for the “china,” but we’ll see if those pieces end up getting moved in here or not. Closed, the table has just about 3 feet from the table to the wall or other furniture.
And with the leaf in the table:
The table will most likely have to be angled when it’s completely open, but it still works just fine.
As for chairs, those tend to be the most expensive aspect of a dining “set” purchase. I’ve looked for quite some time for something that was a bit more reasonable and ended up selecting the Henriksdal Chair from Ikea.
It’s a slip covered chair that is quite comfortable and has a tall back, so it won’t look too tiny in our dining room, and it’s much more friendlier to the budget! I figured I’ll get 8 chairs and then look for a pair of different upholstered chairs at Homegoods or someplace like that for the host chairs that sit at each end of the table. Usually they have a great selection of pairs of chairs and I figure even if I don’t love the fabric, I can get them reupholstered for way less than it would cost to buy new custom ones.
I just got word that we’ll hopefully have all our new furniture by September, with plenty of time to add the finishing touches before the holidays arrive! I’m still on the look out for a new chandelier and trying to figure out art work. The room will probably need an area rug and some stationary window panels, as well, to complete the look. I’m excited to see it all come together!!!
