How Long Will a Project Take?

October 23, 2021 By Gina Jackson

Let’s get into a little more of the plan when it comes to our homes and home projects. I shared my approach for how to decide on what to tackle first in this blog post.   With that framework, getting realistic on the time frame of a project is the next step.

I had fun wrapping up a few projects this past month with photo shoots. The fun “After” photos are always the last step in a project, but the start of a project happens months before. As with most industries, the home improvement industry is experiencing a ton of product and material delays lately, so it’s even more important to start thinking and planning for a project early, and don’t forget to add in a heaping dose of patience and flexibility!

I am a firm believer in a project with a plan. Managing a project without a clear plan, especially on your own, can be very overwhelming. In my experience, if there is no plan to follow, there is decision paralysis, and either apathetic decisions are made that you end up regretting later, or decisions stop all-together and the project gets put on hold because you just don’t know which next thing to tackle. The best way to figure out all that needs to be accomplished, to have a good experience while doing it, and to achieve the best results, is always starting with a plan. It’s too overwhelming and chaotic otherwise!

So if you are starting to think about a remodel project for your home, like a bathroom or kitchen, I wanted to give you an idea of a Project Timeline. A project like this, when contracting out the work, takes approximately 6+ months from Discovery Call to the last item being installed.
We all know a good DIY can take quite a bit longer!

BEFORE

AFTER

This time frame is also with the expectation that there is a person {the homeowner} or a professional {an Interior Designer/Project Manager} managing the project very closely to be sure things are getting ordered, sub-contractors and contractors are staying on schedule, delays and issues are being addressed in a timely manner, etc. A remodel project can take way longer if it isn’t being closely managed or if the homeowner is doing it all themselves.

There are always unforeseen delays and hiccups in a project, {and these days, there are even more} and that can set your overall timeline back. You just have to expect that.

But knowing the result you are after and having a clear project plan, along with having everything lined up before you start demoing and having ways to problem solve {an Interior Designer or a Contractor, and a lot of times, both} can ensure a project runs as smooth as it can.

If you have a project on the horizon, but have no idea even what you want to fully get done, where to start, or how much it will cost, I would love to schedule a Discovery Call with you.
