Ideas & Inspiration

And the winner is…

July 2, 2012 By Living Solutions Interior Design

Last week I wrote about looking for a sectional. On Saturday, I took my two boys and my hubby to check out the last sectionals on my list and to finalize our dining table selection. I had about 30 minutes {my standard time limit when shopping for large purchases with Jason-funny how we can spend quite a bit longer with everyone in tow when shopping for new suits for him, but I digress…} to show Jason the choices and then as you’ll read, do some re-selects. I ended up going back on my own later in the day to look at everything again, finalize it all and get it on order.

I don’t know what it is about choosing stuff for my house, though, especially big ticket upholstered items that we will have for years. It is so difficult for me!!! I have chosen {and re-chosen} our bedroom furniture, kids furniture and office furniture fairly easily. And I have no problem selecting pieces for clients, but when it came to our large upholstered sectional, I have to admit, I had a hard time deciding and being ok with that decision!

I have always dreamed of having a “blank slate” for my own living room, but I think that is why it was giving me such a hard time. I want it to reflect our lifestyle and the look we are hoping to achieve, be easy to maintain, look like I know what I’m doing as a designer and have a lot of personality. A lot of pressure on one person making the final decisions on most of it!!! I’m lucky to have a husband who wants a beautiful home and encourages me to go for it. He really ultimately just wants it completed and for me to make a decision so we can all enjoy it!!!

Of course, when we went to check the sectionals out, Jason didn’t love the sectional I loved. But we decided I was going to be the one on it more, and if he was hanging out on the sofa, he’d probably be lounging, watching a movie, so it was ok if he liked my second choice better.

He actually liked the Pottery Barn Buchanan the best, but I didn’t love the fabric we had selected that much, and I didn’t love the idea that there was a curved corner for where it would be going in our house.

I think the curved corner looks awesome floated in the middle of the room. But in our best case scenario, if we are able to easily move our cable, it would be in a corner {a great place to drop and hide little “goodies”} and worse case, in between the two step downs from our entry and dining room.  It just seemed funny to me to have a curved corner squared off space, especially between two somewhat awkward steps. We both really liked the fact that the Buchanan’s curved corner had a wedge front to the seat cushion and would allow someone to easily sit in the corner, but ultimately, the cons outweighed the pros on that one.

So we {well, I-it’s pretty much all on me now!} chose the
Cheshire Track Arm Sectional from Ethan Allen.

I initially went in to this project looking for a chenille fabric. That’s what we have now, and from my experience, a chenille wears beautifully. The fabric on our current sofa has held up perfectly after 9 1/2 years. So my goal was to find a chenille I liked. But I wasn’t crazy about the Pottery Barn colors and on the custom front, the chenille fabrics were more than we were hoping to spend.

After selecting a textured fabric I loved in my house that I thought was the starting price point fabric, I learned in the showroom that it was a higher grade than I thought and more than we were willing to pay. So it was back to the drawing table, but I ended up finding this fabric as a replacement.

A neutral textured fabric with tans and grays in it that I think will pick up the navy carpet that’s staying for now in the room. I think it has enough colors and texture that it will hide spots and dirt {at least I’m really hoping!}.

I like the idea of keeping the sofa fairly neutral and then spicing it up with fun pillows.  I pulled a bunch of coordinating pillow fabrics to make sure I loved it, and I think it will look great once it’s in here and it has all the finishing touches to compliment it.

I’m excited to have it arrive {probably not until October :( } and get the first phase of this room completed! We also chose a “formal” dining table, but that’s a whole other post that I’ll save for later in the week!
