A comment we get all the time from clients when starting a new project is “I don’t know where to start. I don’t even know what style I like.” Sometimes it is difficult to narrow in on what styles you like in furniture-curvy or straight; what colors you like-warm or cool, etc. And throw in a partner in that whole equation and it can get doubly confusing!
When we start with a client or (clients), we always tell them to start by looking through any and all catalogs, magazines, and online media and tag everything they love (and don’t love!). If there is another decision maker in the mix, we ask them do the same. It is so much easier to express what one likes through pictures! Our clients might not see a theme of what they are drawn to, but we always do. There are always common threads through the pictures they gravitate towards. It is our job then to help sort it all out, combine different tastes if needed, and make it all functional, beautiful and “them“.
So the first “Tip” when trying to find inspiration for a new project is:
Another “Tip” to use in determining what styles and colors you like and finding inspiration is:
Raid your closet.
We are typically drawn to the same feel for clothes as we are furnishings, both in color and style. If you have a lot of patterns and colors in your closet, you most likely will be drawn to the same in home decor. A lot of tans, whites, blacks, browns? You may be most comfortable in a neutral or monochromatic room with texture-filled details. All blues? A cool color scheme of blues might suit you best.
The whole point in finding inspiration to build a space that fits you (and your family) and helps you to feel most content, relaxed and at home!
And if after all that gathering and raiding, you’re still not sure which way to go, give us a call and we can meet for a design consult and help you determine your style direction and get you happily on your way to a new space!
