Organizing Your Home, One Step At a Time-Toys, Books and Art

April 30, 2012 By Living Solutions Interior Design

This weekend I worked a little bit on organizing {you can read more about that here, and here,} in between celebrating my birthday with my family!  My kind of weekend :) I also got the touch up paint done in the “Command Center,” but didn’t get around to hanging the shelf, yet again. Hopefully this week…I’m so ready for our stuff to be hung up and not piled by the door in a big heap!

But more on the organizing that I did do this weekend! We had noticed our boys weren’t playing with all of their many toys, so I decided we would go through them…together! My oldest is 3 3/4 years old {that 3/4 is very important!} and he’s finally at the age to help me go through our belongings and let me know what he likes and what he doesn’t. I had to make a few considerations for toys that our younger one likes, but we were able to load up another 4 bags of donations!

Included in those 4 bags were some books. We are a family that loves books, and we are always going to the library to gather books to read or the bookstore to add to our own library. We sat down together and went through each and every book and put them on the proper shelf: “baby” books or toddler books on the top shelf, “big boy books” on the lower shelf with a few larger “baby” ones mixed in.

The result…

A nice neat bookshelf which will probably look like this until tomorrow morning.  We have a morning ritual with our boys that they have “reading time” when they first wake up, which helps give mom and dad a chance to wake up, and helps them ease into the day.  Usually the older one gets books out for the both of them and it tends to look like a book bomb went off in there! But at least it will be only the books that they like to read, right?!

After they headed to their nap, I got busy working on the drawers in our entertainment center that house kids workbooks, art supplies, etc.  It had gotten out of control!

I took everything out of all the drawers, grouped “like” things together and made a big pile for the trash and for donating.
And then I put it all back, nice and neatly!

Now I can see everything when it’s time to pull out an activity!
I keep inching my way through this house to make it nice and organized! It’s taking a LONG time!!! But it will get there, I’m sure of it, even if it does takes some time!
Did any of your work on any project this weekend? Or celebrate something fun?
Happy Monday!
