Ideas & Inspiration

Our “Command Center” Design Concept

March 19, 2012 By Living Solutions Interior Design

Hope you all had a great weekend! I’m finally feeling better and for the later part of the week, I just tried to play catch up with family, home, and Living Solutions projects.

Today I thought I’d share about the next space on my own home’s project to-do list. Now that our master bedroom is pretty much complete {for now…I’ll share pictures as soon as I assemble that Ikea chair}, and all of our tax paperwork has been turned in {I HATE WORKING ON TAXES!-so relieved that that is all at the accountants!} I can concentrate on finishing a hopefully somewhat small, but extremely impactful project:

Our “Command Center.”

A couple of weeks ago, we had our entry closet’s shelving taken out and the entire “closet” textured and some drywall repaired.

I’m now ready to prime and paint. And I’m thinking of going with striped walls?!?! Am I crazy? {More inspiration to come on that later this week!}

I’ve already started painting some of the family room Benjamin Moore’s Baby Fawn, and I thought I would carry that color through this little closet/room. Although it looks totally different in many rooms in our house, I like that it’s a light neutral with just a hint of a grayer undertone.

I’m going to couple that with a tried and true favorite, Ben Moore’s Swiss Coffee.

I think it will be a nice, subtle stripe combo that won’t be too in your face. I haven’t even tested the colors on the wall, so we’ll see about my theory when I actually break out the paint and paint brush!

I was recently at a fabric outlet warehouse that I like to visit every now and found this beautiful fabric on the remnant table.

That’s right, $12 a yard. I had no idea at the time what I would use it for, but I decided to pick it up anyways. It’s photographing more gray than the soft robin’s egg blue that it really is. The photograph above with the paint samples shows a truer depiction of the color.
Jill is going to help me make a little box pleat valance for over the top of the existing wood blind that is on the window. There’s no finishing piece on the actual wood blind, so it needs something to cover that up, and I thought a simple tailored valance would work well.
 something a little like this

sorry for the less than great photography!

This shelf will be the main storage unit in the space.
It was once my parents and at some point got handed down to me. It used to be a dark wood finish but a long time ago, my dad painted it white for me.

It’s going to get hung on the wall, and I imagine I’ll put some cute baskets or boxes on there to corral hats, lint rollers, doggie collars, etc.

After some researching, I found this cute, white storage bench on Overstock.com. I hope to get this bench on order very soon! Right now, we have a basket by our side front door that we use for all our shoes. In the new “Command Center,” the boys will have one basket for their shoes and then us grown ups will get one as well.

And awhile back I picked up a longer unfinished wood peg hook that I originally had planned for some place else. I am going to spray paint it and hang it on the wall, just under the white shelf for the diaper bag, swim lesson bag, hats, my purse, etc.

I hope to also possibly find a new home in there for these guys, so I can use the top of my white little desk to display more family photos.

My hope for this room is to have a place to be able to unload all our crap stuff-bags, purse, sweat shirts, shoes, hats, unopened mail…and have it stay fairly neat in one little area {that I’m so lucky I will be able to close if needed!} and not have it over flow into our living space.

Even if you don’t have a whole closet or room to devote to a drop-off zone, you could still accomplish this on even a small wall in an entry, garage or laundry room. All you would need is a shelf of some kind, some hooks for hanging, a place to keep shoes, etc. and it would help make your home more organized, calm and functional.

Does anyone have a space like this in their home? A wall or a room? Any other ideas for must haves in a home’s command center? I can’t wait to get started! I’ll keep you updated on the progress!
